5 Reasons to Buy Local Fruit and Produce

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Organic and local fruit and produce might be a bit more expensive that what you’re used to paying for your fruit and produce, but you are sure to not only taste the difference while you’re eating them, but feel the difference in your overall sense of well-being. If you think that buying local and organic fruit and produce is simply a trend, there are five reasons in particular that you should be aware of.

  1. It Helps the Environment

One of the absolute best things about buying local organic fruit is that it’s much better for the environment. Regular fruit and produce is usually grown with pesticides, which can have detrimental effects on the soil and water as well as the wildlife. The soil can be ruined for years, which means that anything that grows in that soil may not necessarily be as healthy and safe to eat as it can possibly be.

  1. Support Local and Small Farmers

Rather than buy your produce and fruit from a factory farmer, your money will undoubtedly be more appreciated by a small or local farmer. You can also buy from online retailers like FruitGuys who work directly with small and local farmers to bring you the freshest produce. Also smaller farms tend to care more about what they grow, how they grow it, and how they sell it. Something else to think about is that small farmers usually earn a fairer price for their produce, which means that you’re helping them to grow more fruit and produce that they can sell to more people looking for something that are healthier and safer to eat.

  1. Organic Farming Is Good for Biodiversity

Research has shown that organic farming is more beneficial to biodiversity for every level on the food chain, including bees, birds, bacteria, mammals, and beetles. The reason for this benefit is that organic farming is done without the use of pesticides or harmful fertilizers.

  1. More Options

Through the use of genetically-modified fruit and produce, factory farming has lowered our options for produce and fruit. When you buy fruit online from organic and local farmers, you might be surprised to see a few selections that you’ve never heard of. If you’re someone who loves produce or fruit, you may find a new favorite fruit to sink your teeth into. We’ve managed to learn more and more about the true nutritional value of the foods that we eat, so imagine what new and beneficial nutrients and vitamins we might find in heirloom varieties of produce and fruit.

  1. Organic Is Healthier for You

After switching from “regular” foods to organic and locally grown foods, you might feel better and healthier. Even though the studies on whether or not eating organic food is more beneficial to your health are inconclusive, something to keep in mind is that non-organic foods often contain traces of pesticides even after you wash the food off. If pesticides pose such a danger to the soil, water, and wildlife, you can only imagine what it does to the human body.

The next time you’re in the mood for some fresh fruit and produce, consider buying organic rather than non-organic. Your health is sure to thank you, and so are the environment and the farmer you buy from.

Recycle and Reuse to Save Resources

Saving resources in the home go beyond not wasting electricity and water. You can also recycle or reuse items such as old clothes, newspapers, glass containers, certain plastics and electronics to help conserve the Earth’s resources.
First, try to gather items that you don’t want, but which someone else might use. Hold a garage sale of household things that are useable and in good condition or gives items away to friends and relatives who want them. If items are really worn out or no longer safe to use because parts have broken off, put them into the recycling bin. Look at things you discard in terms of their separate components. For instance, instead of trashing an entire used or old make-up item, examine it to see if it has parts like a glass mirror that can be recycled.
Second, recycle plastic bags. Don’t just take a bag from the supermarket to carry your purchases home and then discard it. Reuse it in other ways, such as bagging food trash and don’t throw it out until it is full or for picking up dog poo if you have a pet.
If you bring home takeaways in plastic containers, try to reuse those containers too. Although scientists warn that certain plastics are not safe for microwaving food in, storing heated food or as a long-term drink bottle, you can still reuse them safely in other ways. Once they are washed and cleaned, use them to hold dry items, keep things in your refrigerator tidy or as container to give away home-cooked food to friends and family.

Homeopathy 101

Homeopathy is a form of alternative healing that treats disease through remedies, administered in minute doses that can produce in a healthy person, symptom similar to those of the diseased. It is based on the doctrine of “like cures like”. Meaning a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in a healthy can cure similar symptoms in people who are ill. Also adhering to the rule of minimum dose, homeopathy is established on the principle that the lower the dose of medication, the more potent the cure. Derived from the Greek words “homoios” which means “like” and “pathos” which stands for “suffering”, homeopathy was founded in 1796 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann.

Despite being widely recognised and generally accepted by society, homeopathy has its share of critics. A common grouse is that it is merely a placebo. This, based on the fact that homeopathy remedies are prepared by repeatedly diluting the medicine until it no longer carries any of its original active ingredients. It could also be rooted on the common form of homeopathic remedies, sweet pills (a way remedies is delivered by coating the “diluted” medicine on sweet pills), which adds to the allegations. Natural from a scientific point of view, this may seem incomprehensible. In the homeopathy circle however, it is intangible. “It is because homeopathy works along the energy plane. Looking at it from the chemical aspect, like you would pharmaceutical – produced drugs, will not offer any insight,” reveals homeopathy Anita Madnani. Several years back, reports surfaced that nanotechnology held the key in providing evidence of the inner workings of homeopathy but it was challenged by the medical fraternity.

To date, there have not been any concrete findings that support the effect of homeopathy remedies on a host of diseases covering physical, emotional and mental conditions. Instead, it has been repeatedly sought by many who claim its effectiveness, including the British royal family who have been advocates of homeopathy for decades. So how does it work? “Homeopathy remedies act by stimulating the defence mechanism and healing system to self-heal.”

It commonly hears homeopathy refer to the vital force. Homeopathy believes that it is the energy or “vibrational pattern” of the remedy, instead of the chemical content that facilitates the healing process. Also referred to in some circle as “memory of water”, whereby the structure if the water or alcohol is altered by the process of dilution but retains the essence which stimulates the healing by activation what Hahnemann referred to as vital force. Also known chi or prana, it is considered energy which is inherent in the body that facilitates healing. Due to the similarities in this aspect with the energy healing modalities, it has been suggested that the remedies work through electromagnetic (as the nanotechnology research postulates). As it is the case with energy healing, it is necessitated at least a moderate measure of vital force for it to be effective. This is why late stage cancer patients may not respond to homeopathy treatment.

So, whether homeopathy is effective or not, it depends on your belief.

Goodness of Brown Rice

The benefit of brown rice is well known. It has fibre content, is rich in anti – oxidant and also promotes the slow sugar release. Now, it’s also been proven to combat Angiotensin II, an endocrine protein, which is known to cause the development of high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. According to research carried out by Satoru Eguchi, an associate professor of physiology, there is a component in a layer of tissue surrounding grains of brown rice that is effective against Angiotensin II.

During analysis, it was found that Subaleurone components that were selected by ethyl acetate extraction, inhibited Angiotensin II activity in the cultured vascular smooth muscle cells. This is suggested that the Subaleurone layer of rice offers protection against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. It could also help explain why fewer people die of cardiovascular disease in Japan, where most people consume at least one rice – based dish per day, than in the America, where rice is not a primary component of daily nutrition.

Furthermore, brown rice also provides a lot of nutrients such as Selenium, which reduces the risk of developing common illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis. Besides that, One cup of brown rice provides 80% of our daily manganese requirements. Manganese helps the body synthesize fats, benefits our nervous and reproductive systems.

So, why don’t we replace our white rice with the healthier alternative rice – the brown rice to promote a healthier lifestyle?

Oatmeal and whole grain cereals have been touted as the perfect start to a day for years. Its high level fibre and complex carbohydrate content is known to satiate one’s appetite for an extended time, helps lower Low density lipoprotein (LDL) “bad” cholesterol and facilitate weight loss. This is opposed to carbohydrates like white bread, potatoes, white rice and pastries which are quick boost blood sugar levels, but stimulates hunger faster, thus causing one to snack or overeat.

Despite its obvious health benefits, oatmeal has not been quite well received or widely embraced by the masses. This could be due to its bland taste and soggy texture. The solution to this could be Kordel’s Active Oat 35. Compared to normal oats, it is neutral in taste and is smooth and fine in texture, making it a versatile add – on to food and drinks. Enriched with brown rice, it also provides the heart with phytonutrients that helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

Oats contain a form of soluble fibre called oat beta-glucan which concentrates on the outer layers of the grains (oat bran). Since 1963, numerous studies have proven the beneficial effects of this soluble fibre on cholesterol levels. It works by dissolving in water and forming a thick gel in the digestive tract. This gel, then binds to excess cholesterol and cholesterol – like substances within the gut, preventing it from being absorbed by the body. The gel and cholesterol are then excreted as part of the body’s waste. Studies show that in individuals with high cholesterol, consuming just three grams of oat beta – glucan per day typically lowers one’s total cholesterol by 8% to 23%. This is highly significant as every drop in serum cholesterol translates to a 2% decrease in the risk of developing heart disease.

Oat beta – glucan also helps control blood glucose levels. The carbohydrate found in oat bran is an exemplary energy source because it converts into glucose very gradually, providing sustained energy and greater control of blood glucose levels. Hence, it is good for pre – diabetics who are trying to lower their blood glucose levels. Studies have also shown that oat beta – glucan has beneficial effects on diabetes. Patients with Type 2 Diabetes, who given oat beta – glucan experienced only slightly increase in blood sugar levels compared to those who were given other grains.

Additionally, oat beta – glucan also slows down sugar absorption and helps to reduce sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels after meals. The European Food Safety Authority (ESFA) concluded that the consumption of oat beta – glucan can help lessen the spike in blood glucose levels after meals. The local research lab also recognised the fact that oat beta – glucan minimises the rise in blood sugar levels, provided it is not consumed together with food. Therefore, starting off your day with oat beta – glucan may make it easier to keep blood glucose levels under control throughout the day.
